Cool city twinning?

It seems to me that cities, towns and villages on Prince Edward Island are always twinning up with ye olde townes from the old country — Uigg, PEI twins with Uigg, Ireland, for example (note: I don’t know this to be the case, nor do I know if there’s a Uigg, Ireland, and, indeed, Uigg might be a Scottish placename, in which case I might find my barn burned down tonight).

I would like to propose that we abandon this, and move to a “cool city twinning” system. Let’s twin up Stratford with Venice, Cornwall with Barcelona, and Charlottetown with New York or LA.

This will mean fewer tea cosy exchanges, but might result in more interesting techno DJs from Seville making guest appearances on the Island.

Uigg is an island off Scotland in the Hebrides historically part of the lands of MacLeod.

I dream of a sailing ship fleet made for cruising in comfort or on a budget — about four boats that leisurely make a circuit from Sydney to Rejkavic or the Azores, stopping in St John’s and Greenland and Charlottetown. A little cross-culture pollination of those able to bear the sea.

Twinning Charlottetown with Summerside would be a stretch.

Pete…what a strange coincidence — the day you posted this I was reading some obscure magazine at the doctors office (which i generally don’t like to do because the magazines are generally not very nice to touch) and read that the gentleman who heads Timeless Technologies in CTown is from Uigg, PEI. wierd, maybe.

Perhaps Uigg should twin with Vancouver? That might be a start!

Uigg, PEI was named by my great-great-grandfather after Uig on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The first settlers to arrive in the area (in 1829) came from Uig, Scotland.
