All My Life’s a Laptop (Sun-up and Sundown)

Since my iMac’s hard drive came crashing to a halt three weeks ago (it’s in the shop, care of little mac shoppe, right now), I’ve been using my trust 2001-era iBook as my only computer.

And it has been rather pleasant. There’s almost nothing I miss, save for the large 17” screen. Things are marginally slower on the iBook, but not in a way I notice most of the time. I benefit from having everything in one place, especially handy when I travel. And it’s got a battery, which is a big help when the power goes out.

I think what I’m going to do when I get back to civilization is to pass this trusty iBook on to brother Johnny, sell the iMac (either using the vestibule method, or on eBay), and buy the upgraded 15 inch iBook, which has a bigger screen, a faster processor, and more memory.

i’m with you on that pete. i’m going for the new 15” PowerBook (which I almost mistook for the 17” Powerbook when I saw it in Vancouver last month). The only question will I wait for Panther to come out or not. It’s only a matter of days! but circumstance have left me having to use Jamie’s old iBook for the past week or two and it’s a great little machine… it *almost* makes me reconsider dishing out that extra $1000 for the PowerBook….almost.

While it’s not a mac, I moved my life to a laptop last year too. That said, I’ve been finding more and more of what makes a computer

Seems that 3 weeks is a very long time for a laptop to be down due to a hardrive failure.

Wayne, to clarify: it’s my iMac (desktop) that’s in the shop. The actual process to get the hard drive repaired took a week; it’s still in the shop only because I’m in New Hampshire, and it’s in Charlottetown, in the shop.

Peter, et. al.

I am really finding that I’m spending more and more time on the laptop too.. the wireless connection makes for a great deal of convenience. My largest complaints are about battery life, keyboard (natural kb laptops anyone?), and screen size.

I was going to complain about re-sale value, but that’s how I was able to get this Dell PIII 500 for a reasonable price…

I also run knoppix on this machine too (Try it yet Stephen?) All I have to do is drop in the CD and reboot and up pops a fully configured KDE desktop complete with a LARGE set of tools/utilities.
