Twindow Fans

The best household investment Catherine and I have made so far, save the dishwasher, has been the purchase of four Duracraft Twindow fans from Canadian Tire. These are dual-fan units that sit in an open window. They have a good range of fan speeds (and each side can be set independently), and a thermostat so that you can have them shut off when it gets cool. They’re relatively quite, and they just work and work and work summer after summer.

They’re amazing little units. Tempterature control on my third level apartment doesn’t require an air conditioner!

Never again would an air conditioner be sold, if all knew the virtues of the humble window fan. Creating a draft is the key, and an added tip to mosquito sufferers is to create a negative pressure by exhausting air from your home, this way all the eaves, and various leaky air holes will not seep your exhausted breath which attracts them. Just make sure the exhausting window is well screened.

I bought one of those. Unfortunately, it was slated to sit in my window right behind my main 19” monitor. It created crazy EMI and I had to return it. I bought a huge 2” floor fan that sits in front of a door on one side of the room, blowing air in from the balcony.

a 2 inch floor fan doesn’t sound all that huge to me. Then again, I’m a pretty big guy….AS FOR the Twindow fan, what is the approximate cost of one?

I was looking for a fan and after reading this post, I now have a Honeywell Twindow fan (note, the Honeywell and Duracraft are the same models).

Marketing is dead, long live marketing!

Rob — They cost 30 bucks and up, depending on features. I have a basic two speed with thermostat that cost me $29.99 at Schurmans two years ago.

Wayne:

Maybe I should be using real(tm) units.

I concur completely; the one I bought has been perfect for 6+ years. I’d like to know where to get more.
