When I was in high school, I was in Senior Band. I played bass clarinet, and then later the oboe and the bassoon (note to current high school students: playing the oboe does not make you cool).
Last night’s episode of Entertainment Tonight “Where are they now?” on Knots Landing made me remember some of the songs on our set list, which was heavy on television theme songs, including the themes to:
- Mork and Mindy (good bass clarinet part)
- Knots Landing
- Dallas
- Fantasy Island
- The Love Boat
- The Rockford Files
We also played Africa by Toto, which had a great oboe part (which is very rare).
Boy do I ever feel old.

Any thoughts on the ideal high-school band playlist?
Must have “Louie Louie” if it is a marching band.
There is nothing better than a high school band rendition of the theme from MASH (Suicide is Painless), played slightly under tempo, especially when the band has an extra -large flute section.
And although nothing beats TV/Movie theme music, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture is, as far as I can tell from my own survey, a Canadian high school band staple.
Just by way of tangent, as I read these comments there is a bluegrass song playing, streaming in from Australia, and one of the instruments matches the resonance frequency of my desk lamp, which, as a result, is vibrating in time with the music. It is very odd.
The Dallas theme is a perfect band song. It seems like it was written with High Schoolers in mind. So 80s, so 80s….

Nothing beats the Degrassi theme songs though. Boss. Though of course these require vocals.
