A Bus Across America

The inspiration for any travels I’ve taken with Oliver as a father flows directly from a trip I took as a son in 1980: my father and I got on a Greyhound bus in Buffalo, New York the spring that I turned 14 and traveled across the country to San Francisco, down to San Diego, across to Tucson, El Paso and San Antonio, up to Tulsa and then home. Along the way we had many adventures, including renting a car from Skip’s Rent-a-Wreck in Arizona so that we could head off into the desert:

Oliver is now the same age as I was in that picture.

I barely recognize you--which seem especially strange, since I suppose we met only four or five year later. But around that age we change a lot.

Oddly, I look at that photo of me and it’s very recognizably me; I feel like I haven’t changed much in all those years.

On the flip side of that I remember being at home with mom, mike and Johnny. Mom took us to see "The Black Stallion" at the cinemas in Jackson Square in Hamilton. The car battery died I think in the parking garage so we got to ride home in a tow truck. So we had our fun too.

That’s helpful intel, Steve: The Black Stallion came out in October 1979, so that confirms that it was 1980 that Dad and I did the trip.
