Off to Kosice

Map of Central Europe showing location of Kosice Oliver and I are off to Europe for the March school break (we’re leaving Catherine at home to let her have 2 solid weeks of studio time to herself). While we booked tickets to London a few weeks ago, that was never our final destination; after flirting with various grand plans, including taking the train to Istanbul (which is now on the list for a future trip), we’ve settled on Kosice.

Until two hours ago I’d never heard of Kosice, which makes it all the more exciting a destination.

We’re flying there from London Luton on SkyEurope Airlines, an airline I’d never heard of until two hours ago. They’re running a buy-one-get-one-free promotion that ends today, so the total airfare for both of us came to 129 EUR (about CDN $200), taxes in. More excitement.

We’ll spend two or three days in Kosice, then make our way by train to Vienna to visit a friend for a night, then onward by train to Nuremberg where we’ll make a brief stop at the Playmobil FunPark, and then train it back to London for the flight home, possibly stopping in Paris for a night depending on the timing.

The link says it has the oldest coat of arms of any city in Europe. Makes it seem like a suitable pilgrimage site for an aficionado of logos and design. Where else?

Just received confirmation that the Playmobil FunPark will be at least partially open for our visit!

Peter, I have a contact in Paris who rents short-stay apartments. Jen and I were just there in September and loved the one we were in — four blocks from Notre Dame, and much better than a hotel room. The washing machine alone was worth the rental price, to say nothing of the (small but adequate) kitchen.

Minimum stay is usually two nights, but he might be amenable to a single night, depending on availability (which also affects the prices). Email me if you end up deciding to go.

Chuck: I’d be interested in the contact info for your friend in Paris. My wife and I are planning to be there in May, and would love to rent rather than stay at a hotel. Many thanks.

I would love to know how the Kosice adventure went. I hail from Bratislava, western Slovakia, now live on PEI and was surprised to hear of your destination :) There are so many little unknown places to discover… lovely that you are doing this. Cheers!

Oh, Dopplr says you’re arriving the 16th. Too bad, I’m leaving the 13th.

Dopplr, Drupal — who can keep them straight anymore. (I’ve got Drupal on the brain, which explains my typo!)
