Telus

I walked into the Telus store on Kirkwood Drive this morning.

Hello there, ” I said, “do you sell any of the Ericsson cell phones?”

No, we don’t have them,” the clerk replied.

What if I was able to get one somewhere else: would your network support it?”

No, our agreement with Island Tel doesn’t let us activate their phones, it’s part of our agreement,” he replied.

But what if I got one somewhere else?”

Well, it would have to be a Telus phone.”

Okay, thanks,” I said, heading out the door.

Your implication being that this is unique behavior — do we know that it is?

No implication of any sort intended; simply an illustration of how easy it is to lose a customer. I don’t care whether they sell Ericsson phones of Fisher-Price phones — it was the lack of effort, and the general confusion, that made me leave.

Wow — I wouldn’t buy anything much in the way of books, CDs, computer stuff, food, etc. on PEI if that was the rule…

Well, we don’t sell any of the Ericsson models, but have you seen the new Nokia high-end line — let me get one out and show you some of the features.”

…which is to say: make an effort, and I’ll be your customer.

As my phone cost me minus 25 bucks with the rebate, it was not much of a sell obstacle. But if you are running a business with the number, that might be a problem.

Interestingly, I see that I could ditch my home phone with Aliant local plus Sprint long distance, spend about $5 bucks less a month and get another one for the house with 500 minutes long distance to Canada, US, Europe and Australia for free. All of a sudden this week my local New Glasgow service is digital as well. Two limits. I don’t think I can limit Ellen and her sister to 500 minutes a month. One of the great things about unlimited is it means every day for half an hour if you want to talk that month. Also, in my rural PEI, sympatico via the land line is the only internet link I have…I think…

Sir Alan strode boldly forth and muttered: “Also, in my rural PEI, sympatico via the land line is the only internet link I have…I think…” I may be wrong but I thought Wee Kepj could offer local call access from tip to shining tip of our glorious province.
