Plazer = Good

The more I peel off the layers of the new Plazer application for OS X, the more I like. Truth be told, the original Plazes Launcher for the Mac didn’t have any layers to peel; the Plazer, though, is a bona fide Mac app with lots of nice touches. My favourite so far is this:

No more “left the Launcher running at the office so everybody thinks that I’m there and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

The big Plazes challenge for me now is to convince other locals of its value. While it’s proved an excellent tool to locate Cynthia Dunsford, its practical utility as a general purpose “find my friends and family” tool has been limited by slow uptake (or uptake and then opt out). If you’re interested in experimenting with Plazes, but need an overview (complete with what the privacy implications are), get in touch.

I’m digging it Peter, thanks. It seems, though, that you, me and Eramosa are the only 3 people who care about where each other is in this town. If people only knew how handy the plazes tool is.

(A typical IM after launching Plazes and seeing that Peter is the Reinvented Office)

Cyn:Hey
Peter: Hey
C: I see you are at the office.
P: I see you are at The Commons.
C: I’m hungry.
P: Me too.
C: Let’s eat.
P: Pick you up in 5.

Handy as a shirt pocket.

OK, so you are one of those early adopters, installing stuff, and then suddenly you got two installed Plazes apps as icons in the top-left part of your screen real estate.

Solution: make sure which one is the old Plazes app, and Cmd-drag it out of the top toolbar. Drop it, and it’ll disappear in a cloud of pixels.

Hopefully, this will uninstall the AppleScript that put it there in the first place. Or at least, don’t start it at login/startup.

I don’t think I want people to know where I am 24/7. Is it possible that there are others out there like me?

Damn. It keeps crashing on me. Even the crash report crashes.

The main problem for me was the “left the launcher running at the office” problem. Not that it’s such a problem, but I was beginning to feel like a bit of an ass because I could never remember to sign out. I’ll give it a whirl again.

I forgot about 66 Rochford. Rob L. it would be ever so enticing to be stalking you as well. Please come back.
