OlleOlleOlle

Olle Jonsson has taken the wrapping off OlleOlleOlle, his tiny new company.

Remember back two years ago when we were talking about how web shops propagandize themselves? Well Olle’s self-description deserves some sort of award for brevity and pith:

Publishing on the web is supposed to be easy. Supposed, huh? Well, sometimes it is, sometimes you need help.
My name is Olle Jonsson and my company is here to provide that extra guy, a tech-savvy non-employee for hire. When you need it. I help out with PHP, MySQL, blogging, CMSes, and more.
What I do is the technical side of a publishing effort. Not the pictures, not the fonts, not the writing. The content and the design decisions are yours to make.
How do you hire me, then? Find out more…

Not only that, but he publishes his mobile phone number and his hourly rate out there in public (note to self: need to charge more).

Olle and the rest of the Danonerds are geek dining tonight.

I looked his rate up in the currency converter. CDN$95/hr., plus tax!

Ya, but will $95 buy you a burger and a shake in Copenhagen? I’ve always assumed that the high price of consumer goods in places like the UK is offset by comparatively higher wages — all things being equal their purchasing power is roughly the same as ours, kinda logic. Not sure if I’m correct though.

You guys haven’t hired a custom PHP programmer lately, have you? :-)

Lately, we’ve been paying about $60 an hour for experienced programmers, less than half what we were paying in the heady days of tech boom and Y2K. Of course, Danish programmers may be in shorter supply, and the cost of living (and taxes in a socialist country) would certainly be greater. As well, a self-employed contractor who has no “booking agent” such as EDS or Keane to smooth out the highs and lows has to be able to cover off the times when he is “on the beach” looking for the next gig. Of course, private contractors also have to charge enough to cover off pensions, health care (probably all paid for in Denmark), vacation pay, etc. Rethinking, I guess his rates are within reason, considering his qualifications and situation.

After re-reading my comment above I’m surprised someone hasn’t tried to point out that Copenhagen is not in the UK! I used the UK as an example because when I look at UK job boards for the exact same position I occupy here in PEI, my eyes just about pop out of my head at the salaries. Of course, many are in London and I’m sure they have a component built in for exhorbitant costs of living. This is typical: 70k + Car + Bonus + Benefits … that’s 70k quid, not dollars!
